ARTIST STATEMENT

The reason I create art is to humanize transgender and mental health struggles and to bring awareness. My goal in what I create is to help other transgender youth, like myself, feel seen and understood and to help people understand what these experiences are like. I want the audience to understand that the issues we face should not be brushed aside.I prefer to make paintings with acrylic paint in black and white to highlight features and capture focal points. I usually start the painting with a sketch and underpainting before adding solid colours. Once I get past that point, I add more details to make the piece stronger and aesthetically pleasing. I enjoy adding random strokes to give it a more messy look.I am currently exploring the topics of mental health and identity, especially dissociation and feeling disconnected from oneself and the world around. I want people to experience what it is like in my day-to-day life.
